I had a wonderful time during my stay at Kasen Studio. I have been fascinated by traditional Japanese ceramics even since I started working with pottery, and this course has given me a much deeper understanding of the process. Not only did we get to learn new meathods of shaping and trimming our pieces, but also insight into the asthetic sensibillities behind traditinal ceramics. Kato Sensei is very accomodating to our specific skill levels and interests, and gives good direction to what you should focus on in order to improve. In my case, I am very interested in ceramic glazes and their chemistery, and I wanted a better understanding of how Oribe glazes are fired. Sensei gladly shared his knowledge of Oribe and even demonstrated unique meathods that are used in their firing. This has given me a much broader understanding of how a kilns atmosphere affects glaze. I highly recomend this course for anyone who is interested in japanese ceramics.
