Kutani Ware: Characteristics

Kutani is colorful over-glazed porcelain produced mainly in Nomi city in Ishikawa prefecture, Kanazawa city, Kaga city and Komatsu city.

Kutani ware is lined in cobalt blue with zaffer, and then painted with 5 colors comprised of red, yellow, green, purple and dark blue.  As opposed to Arita-yaki, famous porcelain mainly uses red and some other bright colors with fine and thin lines; Kutani has audacious over-glaze designs with strong impacts.

Classic techniques in Kutani-yaki are gold enameled porcelain, gold patches, silver patches and faience. There are Living National Treasures of Kutani-yaki artists as well.
