This tour is designed for participants to experience the full pottery making process in 11 days. Highlight of this tour is that you not only form clay using hand building techniques or potter’s wheel but you will also experience trimming and glazing, something that is not offered in general tours.

Advanced program is also offered for those who would like to learn directly from English speaking potter about clay or old established glazes.

Tour is concluded with a farewell dinner where you will eat from your very own handmade ware.

How can we make a piece in 10 days?
Well it isn’t “RAKU”. Pottery studios used for this tour are also generally the kiln manufacturers and therefore, is equipped with microwave kiln and/or gas and electricity hybrid kiln. By utilising these high technology kilns, drying time is significantly shortened and we are able to complete firing in 10 days. This tour showcases Japanese traditional culture which is ceramics but also another face of Japan which is its advanced technology.

Joining this tour:
- A compact wood fire kiln of 50cm x 40cm x 50cm is available for glost firing 1 time during your stay.
- To use the kiln, you will need to make advance reservations with the studio. Our recommendation is to arrange schedule with the studio owner before you start making a pot.
- You can complete firing as long as approximately 10 hours. (The firing time differs depending on the firing method.)
- Please also arrange with the owner when and which kiln you will use for the biscuit firing, if you need.

About the accommodation:
You will stay in a traditional Japanese house next to the pottery studio. When sleeping, you will use futon (Japanese style tick) with no beds in a Tatami room. You will share a kitchen, a fridge, a bathroom, a toilet, a washing machine and the dining space. The internet is not available in your room.
As this house is built in a traditional way, you can surely feel the “old Japan” throughout the house, but at the same time, there might be some possibilities that you would be in a un-private situation, as you have to share the kitchen, the toilet, the bathroom etc, and also the walls are thin.

About the meals:
The place is equipped with kitchen. Feel free to cook. The owner will tell you where the nearest grocery store is.
With extra charge, we can upgrade your plan to include “breakfast” or “breakfast and dinner”. For more detailed information, please contact us.

English: The studio owner speaks rudimentary English, but he is well accustomed to taking care of non Japanese people, as they have accepted quite a lot of guests from all over the world.
